Pet Loss & Grief Support

Losing a pet is losing a member of the family. The grief can be just as deep as any other loss, and there’s no right or wrong way to feel. Whether your pet’s passing was sudden or you’re facing a difficult decision about their quality of life, you don’t have to go through it alone.

Grief Looks Different for Everyone

Some people feel sadness right away. Others feel numb, guilty, angry or even relieved after a long illness. All of these reactions are normal. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, and it’s common for it to come in waves, especially around routines like mealtimes, walks or the moment you walk through the door.

Ways to Take Care of Yourself

  • Give yourself permission to grieve. Your bond was real, and so is the loss.
  • Talk about your pet. Share stories with friends and family who knew them, or with others who understand pet loss.
  • Create a small ritual or memorial. Planting a tree, making a photo book or writing a letter to your pet can help you honor their life.
  • Keep routines where you can. Gentle structure, like regular meals and sleep, can make hard days a little easier.
  • Reach out for support if your grief feels overwhelming or isn’t easing over time.

Helping Children and Other Pets

Children often grieve in short bursts and may ask the same questions many times. Honest, simple answers are usually best. Avoid phrases like “put to sleep” with young children, since they can cause confusion or fear around bedtime. Surviving pets may also notice the change. Some become clingy, quiet or restless. Keeping their routine steady and offering a little extra attention helps them adjust.

When You’re Facing a Difficult Decision

If your pet is elderly or living with a serious illness, questions about comfort and quality of life can feel impossible to answer alone. Our veterinarians are here to talk through what your pet is experiencing, what options you have and what to expect, so you can make the decision that’s right for your pet and your family.
